World No. 5 Hugo Calderano leads the singles field at WTT Star Contender Goa 2024

From January 23 to January 28, Manika Batra and Harmeet Desai will spearhead the Indian challenge in singles at the Peddem Indoor Stadium in Goa.

World No. 5 Hugo Calderano is set to lead a formidable singles lineup at the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024 table tennis tournament, taking place at the Peddem Indoor Stadium from January 23 to 28.

Calderano, a former Youth Olympics bronze medallist from Brazil, is among the 17 top-20 stars participating in the singles main draw. Indian players Manika Batra (35th in women’s singles rankings), Harmeet Desai (reigning men’s singles national champion, ranked 75th), and Sreeja Akula (ranked 89th) will also compete.

The WTT Star Contender Goa is a prestigious event in the international table tennis calendar, offering players ranking points for the WTT Cup Finals and WTT Champions Series qualification.

The men’s singles main draw features top players like 17-year-old French star Felix Lebrun (ranked eighth), two-time Olympics bronze medallist Dimitrij Ovtcharov, African legend Quadri Aruna, and others.

In the women’s singles main draw, participants include world No. 9 Shin Yubin of South Korea, world No. 14 Xiaoxin Yang, Joo Cheonhui, and last edition’s runner-up Cheng I-Ching.

The singles main draw consists of 48 players, including 34 direct entries, four wildcards, two top-20 nominations by WTT, and eight qualifiers. The doubles main draw features 16 pairs, including 10 direct entries, two wildcards, and four from the qualifiers.

Indian pairs securing direct entries include Manika and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran (mixed doubles), Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee (women’s doubles), and G Sathiyan-Sharath Kamal and Manush Shah-Manav Thakkar (men’s doubles).
