Newcastle United beat Tottenham for Champions League spot

A controversial opening goal for Newcastle and a sublime solo run from Miguel Almiron gave the north east side a huge 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in a stormy London. Spurs’ talisman Harry Kane did net a consolation from a corner, however the Magpies ran out eventual winners

Following a convincing 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, Antonio Conte shuffled his pack, making five changes, including a first start since January for Oliver Skipp in midfield.

Newcastle arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium unbeaten in six and an opportunity to move into the top four beckoned should they win.

Despite not scoring in any of his Premier League starts this season, Son Heung-min looked lively from the start, seeing a curling effort go narrowly over before being denied by Nick Pope in a one-on-one situation.

The Magpies stopper was kept busy throughout the first half and was forced into a good save by Kane on the half hour mark. Against the run of play, the visitors managed to take the lead.

A coming together between Wilson and Hugo Lloris left the French keeper on the floor allowing the striker to brilliantly finish from outside the area. Newcastle came alive after taking the lead and doubled their advantage through Almiron.

The Paraguayan showed tremendous pace on the right to beat his man before neatly finishing his fifth Premier League goal in as many games.

The heavens opened in North London at the break, with a powerful rain shower perfectly reflecting the glum mood among the home support who made their feelings known, booing their side off at the break.

Less than 10 minutes after the restart, Tottenham Hotspur found a route back into the game early in the second half when a Son corner was flicked on by Clement Lenglet to a gleeful Kane at the back post for a tap in, netting for a 10 time in the league this season.

Conte’s side attempted to push for an equaliser, but found themselves unable to break Newcastle’s rearguard. Perhaps that shouldn’t come as a surprise given Eddie Howe’s men have conceded a league-low 10 goals this season, and that saw them over the line to move into the UEFA Champions League places, a far cry from where the club was when the ownership changed hands last year.

The Magpies are now just two points behind Spurs, who have lost both of their last two games.
